Mary Nell Crapitto was the first woman to be elected Judge of a county court in Galveston County. She was sworn in and took the bench on May 16, 1994 and has been re-elected to three subsequent terms thereafter. She is currently seeking her fifth term in office.

County Court One is a statutory county court-at-law with jurisdiction over criminal misdemeanor cases, family and juvenile matters, as well as civil lawsuits.
